UBE / MBE Bar Exam Overview

An independent, unofficial guide to the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), the multiple-choice component of the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or reviewed by the NCBE or any state bar admissions authority.

Format last checked: September 2026. The Uniform Bar Examination runs across two test days, typically in February and July each year. Day 1 combines the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) -- 6 thirty-minute essay questions (3 hours total), drawing on the 7 MBE subjects plus 5 essay-only subjects (Business Associations, Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Trusts and Estates, and Secured Transactions) -- in the morning, and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT) -- 2 ninety-minute tasks (3 hours total) testing lawyering skills using a closed universe of facts and law provided with the task, not memorized subject law -- in the afternoon. Day 2 is the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) alone -- 200 multiple-choice questions (175 scored, 25 unscored pretest items) split across a 3-hour morning session and a 3-hour afternoon session, covering 7 equally weighted subjects. All three components are developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) and administered by individual state bar admission authorities. Scores from all three are combined into a single UBE score; each adopting jurisdiction sets its own minimum passing score and may have additional state-specific requirements (such as a separate state law component or MPRE). Verify current fees, eligibility, jurisdiction-specific requirements, and testing dates against the NCBE's and your target jurisdiction's own materials before registering to sit for it.

Three ways to practice the MBE here

Pick a single subject in the Practice Bank for a focused, timed testlet (up to 15 questions, paced at about 1.8 minutes per question), or take the Full MBE Mock Exam: a fresh 200-question set drawn and shuffled every attempt, proportioned to match each subject's equal exam weight, timed at the real exam's full 360-minute duration.

How to use the Essays (MEE) and Performance Test (MPT) sections

Pick an essay or task, set a timer, and write your own answer in the provided textarea before revealing the model answer (your draft isn't saved anywhere — it's just there to slow you down into actually writing before you look). Essays focus on the 5 subjects tested only on the MEE, since the 7 MBE subjects already get deep multiple-choice coverage elsewhere on this page. MPT tasks are self-contained closed universes — everything you need is in the File and Library provided; no outside legal knowledge should be required.

A note on scoring

The NCBE scales and combines MBE, MEE, and MPT scores into a single overall UBE score; there is no published MBE-only, MEE-only, or MPT-only percentage cutoff, and each adopting jurisdiction sets its own minimum passing UBE score (commonly in the 260–280 range out of 400). The MBE mock reports plain accuracy (percent correct) with a study-signal label — not an official scaled score. The MEE and MPT sections here provide model answers for self-assessment, not official point sheets or scoring rubrics.
